Lake Barcroft, VA is a census-designated place in Fairfax County. It is a community centered around a manmade lake with the same name, Lake Barcroft. There are roughly 10,000 residents who live in the area surrounding the reservoir with Falls Church to the north and Annandale to the south.
Lake Barcroft was named for Dr. John W. Barcroft who operated a mill on Holmes Run in the mid-1800’s. The lake was later developed as a water reservoir to serve the city of Alexandria’s needs. In 1972, Hurricane Agnes passed over Lake Barcroft and the water level rose three feet higher than the dam, overflowing and causing damage downstream. It would have been much worse had the dam broken, and repairs were made including watershed improvements.
