Lake Barcroft, Virginia
Lake Barcroft is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County, Virginia. Lake Barcroft is also a privately owned lake named after Dr. John W. Barcroft, who owned and operated a mill on Holmes Run during the mid-19th century. The lake is part of the Cameron Run Watershed and is managed by the Lake Barcroft Association (LBA). The Alexandria Water Company began construction of the Lake Barcroft Dam on Holmes Run to create a drinking water reservoir for the city of Alexandria in 1913. The 620 million gallon reservoir was completed in 1915. In 1972, Hurricane Agnes hit and the lake flooded past the dam and eroded its western shoulder. Residents established the Lake Barcroft Watershed Improvement District (LBWID) to set up a taxing authority to fund repairs for the dam.
Lake Barcroft is home to many freshwater species of fish and invertebrate. Largemouth bass were introduced to the lake decades ago and have sustained their population. There are also lots of catfish and bluegill in Lake Barcroft, as well as several semi-aquatic creatures like ducks, Canada geese, kingfishers and muskrat.
Lake Barcroft has five private beaches that are staffed with lifeguards in the summer, and the community has over a thousand homes. The Lake Barcroft staff allows sailboats, electric powered pontoons, and self-propelled boats on the lake. Most residents of Lake Barcroft also own a canoe or small sailboat. The community of Lake Barcroft also holds several annual events for its residents, including parades and fireworks for the Fourth of July and organized or informal social gatherings held on the beaches. Lake Barcroft and its beaches are privately owned for use by residents who pay their dues.
